Labeling of detergents, cleaning agents, and laundry detergents

Detergents, cleaning agents, and laundry detergents are one of the broadest categories of household and professional chemicals. It includes products in various forms – liquids, powders, gels, tablets, etc. These products contain surfactants designed to remove dirt from various surfaces (laundry, floors, kitchen and bathroom surfaces, car interiors, etc.). It is important to note that products intended for personal hygiene are not included in this category.

The labeling of detergents and cleaning products is carried out in accordance with EU and national legislation. Products in this category are chemical mixtures, so the labeling of detergents must comply not only with Regulation (EC) No. 648/2004, which sets out the basic requirements for composition, dosage, and information provision, but also with Regulation CLP (EC) No. 1272/2008.

Taking into account the purpose of the product, its composition, and your needs, INTRA VIRES experts provide the following services:

  • Product classification and application of relevant legislation.
  • Labeling of detergents in accordance with the Regulation (EC) No. 648/2004 on detergents and the CLP Regulation.
  • Review and structuring of the necessary information: product name, purpose, composition, instructions for use, precautionary statements, country of origin, necessary manufacturer/importer information, etc.
  • Generation and notification of UFI codes via the PCN system (if applicable).
  • Review of label texts and/or packaging layouts.
  • Regulatory translations of label texts into the official languages of EU countries.
  • Review and correction of advertising claims.
  • Identification and application of national requirements in EU countries.

Labeling of detergents: what should you pay attention to?

  • The labeling process depends on whether the product is intended for professional or domestic use. The specifics of the product and its packaging determine the content of the label information and warnings.
  • When importing products from non-EU countries, it is necessary to check whether all substances contained in the product are registered and authorized, whether they are included in the candidate list, and whether they pose an unacceptable risk to human health and/or the environment. Some chemical substances may be subject to restrictions: technical measures, additional labeling, restrictions on use in certain products, maximum concentration limits, etc.
  • When designing product packaging, not only the text but also the visual elements (e.g., warning labels), safety features (e.g., tactile hazard markings, child-resistant closures), and technical parameters (e.g., aerosol can capacity) must comply with the relevant legislation.

Why is it worth consulting experts?

Even minor labeling errors can have significant consequences, ranging from mandatory product relabeling to market withdrawal, fines, and reputational damage. The INTRA VIRES team will not only clearly identify all relevant requirements, but also help you implement them strategically so that your product ends up on the right shelf.

Countries where we provide this service

The labeling of detergents and cleaning products is based on EU legislation, but each country also applies additional national requirements for labeling. We will help you identify the requirements applicable to your product group and fulfill them in the Baltic countries and other EU countries (under a separate agreement). We can also coordinate multilateral projects and develop an optimal strategy for the smooth supply of products to your target markets.
