Food supplement labelling

All food supplements supplied to the market must be labelled in the official language and comply with European Union and national requirements. Compliance must be ensured both when introducing a new product to the market and when importing or exporting a product to new markets.

Food supplement labelling refers to words, data, trademarks, and registered brand names related to the product. The definition of labelling also includes images and symbols presented on the packaging, in documents, information leaflets, labels, etc.

Although most product categories are harmonised at the EU level, in practice, the labelling of food supplements with the same composition can vary significantly depending on the country to which they are supplied. National standards also contain many other nuances that must be taken into account when discussing not only the composition, form, and target consumer groups of the product, but also the packaging, label, claims, and other important information.

Considering the requirements applicable in the target countries to which the product is to be supplied, we advise on all issues related to the labelling of food supplements. If necessary, we can also actively participate in the labelling process:

  • We assess whether the ingredients of food supplements are permitted in the target markets.
  • We assess whether the claims made on food supplements are permitted in the target EU markets.
  • We prepare multilingual label texts and perform regulatory translations.
  • We check whether the already labelled food supplement labels and packaging comply with the current requirements.
  • We unify label texts adapted to different markets.
  • We participate in the creation of packaging layouts and label designs.

Countries where we provide this service

The labelling of food supplements is closely linked to national requirements. Working together with long-standing partners from various European countries, we ensure compliance with national requirements and provide regulatory translations for all Baltic markets and most EU countries. Compliance is ensured separately for each market where the food supplement is distributed.

Marketing food supplements: what to look out for?

  • It is mandatory to notify each EU country to which the food supplement is supplied. When importing food supplements from non-EU countries, it is first necessary to assess their composition in principle and ensure that there are no critical obstacles that would prevent the product from being supplied in EU countries. In Lithuania, useful information on this subject is provided by the Notified food supplement register. The composition of food supplements must be assessed in accordance with national requirements in each target market. In certain cases, a food supplement notified in one EU country cannot be notified in certain other countries.

The product label and packaging must bear markings adapted to each target market. When labelling, it is mandatory to perform a regulatory translation into the national language and ensure that the claims made about the food supplements comply with national requirements.

  • Optimal course of action: regulatory translations into national languages based on the master text for target markets, preparation of layouts (package designs).
