Labelling of cosmetic products

All cosmetic products placed on the market must be labelled in accordance with European Union and national legislation. Labelling is not only a legal obligation – the information provided on the label helps consumers make informed decisions, reduces the risk of improper use of the product and allergic reactions.

Cosmetic product labelling refers to words, data, trademarks, registered brand names, etc., related to the product. Each element of the labelling (including product function, instructions for use, safety warnings, responsible person’s details, batch number) must comply with the requirements of the competent national authorities and EU legislation, be accurately translated, and presented in a clearly understandable form.

Considering regulatory standards and practices in different markets, we help our clients to prepare or evaluate the labelling information for cosmetic products and to avoid the most common mistakes:

  • We check whether the content and presentation of the label comply with legal requirements.
  • We translate regulatory label texts and other labelling information.
  • We evaluate advertising claims.
  • We advise on label design elements, formatting, font size, etc.
  • We evaluate the compliance and labelling of ingredients.
  • We coordinate and implement multilateral projects in cases where a product is to be supplied to several new markets at once.
  • We design labelling stickers.

Cosmetic product labelling: what to pay attention to?

When importing products from third countries, a correct translation is not enough – it is necessary to evaluate the composition of the product, declared effects, and claims that may be inappropriate in EU countries.
One of the most important aspects of labelling is the presentation of ingredients in INCI format. This allows consumers to identify substances that they cannot or do not want to use.

Countries where we provide labelling services

The main requirements for the labelling of cosmetic products are set out in Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009. We ensure labelling compliance in the Baltic countries and other EU countries (under a separate agreement).

Why should you turn to experts?

Cosmetics labelling is not just a technical process – it is a mandatory and important step in ensuring the safe, legal, and transparent supply of products to the market. Even minor errors on the label can be costly – from the obligation to remove the product from the market or change its packaging to long-term damage to reputation.

Our experts not only have an excellent understanding of EU and national requirements but also help clients to effectively address challenges, optimise the labelling process, and adapt to market changes.
