Safety data sheets for chemical substances and mixtures

The variety of chemical substances and mixtures is very wide – this category includes not only products used in manufacturing, construction, and many other areas, but also everyday products such as hand sanitiser and surface cleaners. Most chemicals and mixtures – especially if they are not used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions – can pose physical hazards, be harmful to health, the environment or even life-threatening. These risks must be clearly identified in advance and documented responsibly.

A safety data sheet (SDS) is a document that provides all relevant information on the hazards, composition, safe use, storage, transportation, disposal, health and environmental effects, and first aid measures for a chemical substance or mixture. A proper and high-quality safety data sheet for a chemical substance or mixture helps to ensure that manufacturers, distributors, and end users receive the detailed information necessary for the safe use of products.

Taking into account the relevant EU legislation, our experts:

  • Prepare safety data sheets.
  • Assess the legal compliance of existing SDSs, update and supplement them.
  • Prepare regulatory translations of safety data sheets into the official languages of various EU countries.

Preparation of safety data sheets for chemical substances and mixtures: key considerations.

  • When supplying chemical substances and mixtures to EU countries, the need to prepare SDSs is stipulated by Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH).
  • From January 1, 2023, safety data sheets must comply with the format set out in Regulation (EU) No. 2020/878.
  • Safety data sheets must be prepared in the official language of each country to which the product is to be supplied. Translations must accurately reflect the applicable terminology and legislation.

Why is it worth turning to experts?

Safety data sheets for chemical substances and mixtures are an integral part of the product regulation process. If an inspection finds that the SDS is inaccurate or misleading, a fine may be imposed. INTRA VIRES experts will not only help you prepare a proper and high-quality SDS, but will also share best market practices and help you smoothly implement multilateral projects.
